A gas price agreement between Russia and Ukraine was signed last night in Brussels, after discussing and fighting for seven long weeks. It is a good sign, not only for the coming winter, but also for the struggle between the European Union, Russia and the Ukraine. Ukraine will pay its debts until the end of the year. International donors will finance it.
The settlement of the issue could be a sign that new dynamics in the fight between Russia and Ukraine have started. The EU and the US have supported Ukraine in an way that gave Kiev a chance to take steps to self determination. By far not all issues have been settled yet, but it looks like the winter will not be as cold as Ukrainians and other Europeans were afraid it would be.
