The capital of Kazakhstan is special: More than one million people live in the city that is only 25 years old. Once it was a place for prisoners: To suffer from extreme temperatures with down to minus 40°C in winter, and more than plus 40°C in summer.
The small town was turned into the capital of Kazakhstan to show how man is able to fight extremes in nature – and survive. The lively city is in the middle of the step, designed as a capital, and has quite a few interesting buildings and places. Here are some of the places I could visit, during many visits since 2008.
For two years, the capital was named Nur-Sultan, after President Nursultan Nasarbayev, who led the country since its independence in 1991 until 2019.
